The Preamble Becons| Scene One: Act One

[The camera opens to some slight shifting as it traces the path of the ethereal being it has been pointed at, there is a slight bit of delay and the furious sound of a pen on paper in the very near background. Anima, a Misdreavous, is eagerly flitting about somewhere in Goldenrod while a certain mad scientist is taking notes.]

...not entirely unlike their p-p-power, however so very different in so very profoundly many ways. So many subspecies with infinitely many different potential uses and talents. A nearly inexhaustible amount of resources here for research...

[The camera pauses as Anima is now staring directly into it and beyond it. It makes a few cries, then passes through the camera and begins to do...something. Immediately the camera shifts wildly in various directions and Agnus makes a very obvious noise of irritation.]

Anima. Anima! Return that at once, you m-m-m-miserable phantom! Anima! I am p-p-perfectly aware of where I need to be.

[Cut to Agnus' face, sans monocle, noticeably irritated. Anima hovers around him enthusiastically.]

It was my assumption that these strange c-creatures would prove vastly less unwieldy to a keen wit and immovable will. They most certainly do not. [He reaches out and snatches the monocle back up from the creature when it is unexpected, then places it back on his face calmly.]

If any members of the O-order of t-t-the Sword are present on this band, I advise you to contact me immediately. Chief Alchemist Agnus, reporting. Awaiting c-c-c-contact, over and out. [The broadcast cuts out, but the link is left open for contact.]

[On the plus side: Kyrie is safe, and presumably a whole fucking region away from this wackjob! And Nero will endeavour to keep it that way.

However: he's still back. Aside from Sanctus himself appearing on the gear, there really isn't anyone else Nero would be less happy to see.]

Watch your words!

[He slams his fists down on something irritably, then picks up a clipboard and begins to jot down information furiously.]

Nearly as foul-mouthed and irritably coy as that d-d-d-d-d...devil brat. I do not take kindly in the least to your t-t-t-type.

[Still, he'd best to say hello. Ignoring Agnus has never really done him any good, and he knows better than to think that the man's speech impediment hides anything less than a ruthless mind.]

[Which doesn't mean Nero can't mock him for it. Game on.]

Well, well. Look what the c-c-c-cat dragged in.

[Oh, for the love of fuck.]

Wow. Wow. That set you off? Really?

If you want foul-mouthed and irritating, I can fragging give you foul-mouthed and irritating.

[Not one, but two of the miserable demonic prats.]

[It never rains. Never. It POURS.]

[Nero. And Dante. As if one of them wasn't enough to drive him utterly mad, now both the miserable little spawns of Sparda had to crawl into his new life. Absolutely brilliant.]

[Well, he humored one of them. Might as well give the other little pup a bone, as it were. Agnus takes a breath and attempts to gather himself before activating the com unit again. Dante was one thing, Dante was a fatal threat that would require careful planning and coordination to mitigate. Nero, however, was a miserable little dog that needed nothing more than a bone to chase and a bit of clever misdirection...especially now that his demonic power was a non-issue.]

[Say hello to a familiarly smirking psychopath. Oh, he is glad to see the lesser of two evils. Game on, indeed.]

Nero, so good to see you again. I was hoping something would come along to keep me amused during the off hours. You're t-t-terribly late, you know. Dante has already beat you to the p-p-p-p-p-p...punch. Still trying to act clever, I see.

[He quickly begins jotting down notes on a familiar clipboard.]

I must confess, I was beginning to think it would be a little too quiet around here. Now that I have you to experiment with as well as the son of Sparda this will be all too amusing. Oh, but where are my m-manners.

[Agnus stares back at Nero with a mix of amusement and annoyance, then adjusts his monocle.]

How have you been, boy? Still as loud and foul-mouthed as ever, I take it. Kyrie isn't around here, too, is she?

[During his little monologue about the pursuit of knowledge, Trish has got up and handed a sandwich to DJ (her Houndoom), and offered peanuts to Luce and Ombra (her Kirlia and Gothita). She's just pulling out a beer from the cooler when he mentions meeting up.

Crap. Even if she was going to keep up this charade, she can't very well do it with her appearance being what it is. Stupid lack of powers.]

I'm too far afield to make the journey quick enough to catch you; if I give up my position now I'll lose sight of my target. Rest assured, I will follow my orders to the letter.

[Agnus begins furiously writing down Savior only knows what at this point, occasionally glancing up to glare murderously at whomever it was that had made a nuisance of himself so quickly.]

If I wanted 'foul-mouthed and irritating' I would be speaking to the little demonic prat. I have no idea who you are, and to be p-p-p-p-p-...perfectly honest I could utterly care less. If your only intention was to insult a man for his speech, begone.

Very well, Gloria. I will contact you at a later time. I must return to my preparations.

[He pauses, then makes a thoughtful sound before speaking again.]

May the Savior watch over you, Sister. Keep watchful and safe.

[Oh, he was trying hard to make that sound anything but flat-out fake.]

[Boy did he ever not miss that face. Agnus gets the bird flipped at him.]

Experiment, huh? Aren't you getting a little ahead of yourself? Can't keep a leash on one little ghost, and you think you can talk big? You're the one who's late, doc.

[Yeah, he's being cocky--and definitely avoiding the subject of Kyrie, because he doesn't wanna rise to the bait.]

And you as well, Brother. I'll be in touch. May the Saviour be with you on your journey.

[Her voice is the same, controlled, silken purr that gives away no hint of her growing curiosity.]

[Oh, and he's just taking all this down as they go along.]

Anima? Oh, she is a rather overly-energetic thing; I'll admit. She serves her purpose, as will you. As for 't-t-talking big' as you so put it, I have every intention of enjoying your p-p-presence here beside his.

[He pauses and looks back up.]

I see you d-dodged the question of your little p-p-princess.

[And then grins wider.]

Well then, Knight. With her around I will have a most welcome d-d-d-d-d-...distraction from this irritable noise haunting in the background.

[He scribbles down a few more notes, then sets his clipboard aside.]

She has such a lovely voice, you know. It would be a pleasure and a privilege to hear her sing again.

'A keen wit and immovable will', was it? Don't know what kind of result you were expecting, given the circumstances.

[At the mention of Kyrie, Nero's eyes flash, but only briefly.]

You know, it breaks my heart to have to agree with you on something, but Kyrie's voice really is all that and then some. Somehow though, I don't think she'll oblige you. [You know, after that whole unfortunate bit where you kidnapped her? Yeah that.]

Besides, you'll have to go through me first.

Anima, as with any other animal will be tamed with time and forcefulness. In the meantime...

[He reaches up to tap his chin a few times thoughtfully.]

Yes... Yes, this...is a t-t-t-tricky situation, isn't it. Well, kind, sweet, innocent little thing that she is; I suspect Kyrie will forgive me my t-t-trespasses. You, on the other hand, will just have to stand aside like a good little guard d-d-d-d-d-...dog when she obliges. Ah, and I will savor her beautiful voice so when she does.

[He gestures off dismissively.]

[He sorely wishes he could refute Agnus' claims as easily as Agnus dismisses him, but he knows Kyrie's nature all too well. If anyone could forgive their attacker, it's her. He wishes he could say something to the effect of she knows your nature or she'd never give you the time of day, but he knows voicing it would only betray his doubt. So instead, he focuses on what he can control, namely his own reactions.]

I won't stand aside for you or anybody. Keep thinking you've got the upper hand, I'll prove you wrong eventually. I won't let Kyrie come to harm from the likes of you.

I have no intention of bringing harm to her, Nero. Her role in my research has come and passed...for now, at least. No, no, boy. My interest lies solely on you. You, and Dante.

[Pardon him if he doesn't quite believe you! His eyes narrow lightly.]

Good luck with that. You think I'll just let you have your fun? I don't see what good it'll do you, anyway.

[He means himself, of course. With his powers gone, what use is he to Agnus' research?]

You wanna get your head out of your exhaust pipe for maybe two seconds? I was asking you a fragging question.

Then your path will lead you oblivion once more. Rid a hero of his villain and he is simply on vacation, but rid a villain of a hero and he dies of boredom.

Humans have and always will be able to choose for themselves right and wrong, but know...that the answer you seek will reveal itself when you are with mankind...and not against it. The darkness in your mind will only blind you; with it, you will be unable to see what you seek...as well as the bullet that releases you from your torment.

To which the answer is 'no.' If by some small chance you mean to call attention t-t-to my stutter, then you should have very well c-c-c-c-c-c-c...calculated it would be conceived as insulting to so b-b-b-blatantly bring it to mind!

[He finishes writing, then reaches a hand up to adjust his monocle.]

Or do I assume t-t-too much to think you might catch that?
